Hubbie inspires award-winning art

A Goolwa artist has won a prize for a mixed media portrait of her husband.

Lisa Ingerson's Arky 2 was announced as the portrait hanger's prize winner for the Royal South Australian Society of the Arts (RSASA) on Sunday, June 28.

The announcement was made by Adelaide Lord Mayor Martin Haese at the opening of the RSASA Portrait Prize exhibition.

Lisa said she was surprised to win the prize, but incredibly excited because it was voted for by the artists - her peers - who hang the artworks in the exhibition.

She classifies the 152cm x 122cm artwork as a 'mixed media' collage, with a base acrylic paint layer, building blueprints layer, oil paint layer and coated with resin.

She said the layering technique is symbolic of her subject's layers as a person, with the blueprints in her winning piece recognising her husband's construction career.

Having always had an appreciation for art, Lisa began art school 10 years ago, and has since shown her work at The Convent Gallery in Daylesford, Victoria, and in Sydney.

Lisa dabbles in various techniques and subjects for her art, but her current favourite is mixed media portraits, such as Arky 2.

She believes others are often hesitant to purchase portrait pieces because they do not know the subject.

"People often say 'well, I don't know that person'," she said.

"But they hang a landscape they like, although they don't know where it is of.

"I think if it's visually appealing to you, you should hang it at home."

The Portrait Prize exhibition, which also features the work of the other six categories' winners, will run until July 26 in the RSASA Gallery, Level 1, Institute Building, on the corner of North Terrace and Kintore Avenue, Adelaide.

Lisa is one of four artists who will take part in portrait demonstrations of Martin Haese on Tuesday, July 14, from 11am to 1pm at the RSASA Gallery.

She has previously won the 2014 RSASA Characters of the Fleurieu with her portrait piece of Dr Anthony Bedford, It's not Rocket Science.

Her artwork will be displayed locally in the Lisa Ingerson Solo exhibition for the South Australian Living Artists (SALA) Festival.

The exhibition will run from July 25 to August 30, with its official opening at 2pm on Thursday, August 8 in the South Coast Regional Arts Centre (old Goolwa police station).
